Editorial director of Southwest: The Magazine for Southwest Airlines, Jay has almost 40 years’ experience as a journalist, editorial manager, and content consultant. He was the founding editor of Attaché , the former inflight magazine for US Airways, as well as the in-room magazine for Bass Hotels, Navigator—all with Pace. Jay has also served as editorial director of the Sports & Fitness division for Rodale Inc.; deputy editor of Outside Magazine; and vice president of content for the SiteShell Corporation. One of the nation’s leading experts on rhetoric, he conducts persuasion strategy and training for clients as varied as Kaiser Permanente, Harvard, and NASA. Bloomberg BusinessWeek profiled him and his work with Ogilvy UK in a feature titled “Jay Heinrichs’s Powers of Persuasion.” He is the author of the bestselling Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion. The book has been published in six languages and released in a new edition. The leading modern work on rhetoric, it has been taught in more than 3,000 college classes and countless AP English Language & Composition classes. He has also authored Word Hero: a book on figures of speech, tropes, and “witcraft.”
